HN math teacher Mr. Anthony Lanza earned his BS in mathematics from Grove City College and his M.Ed from Grand Canyon University. He is currently in his fourth year at HN, where he teaches Algebra 2, Honors Algebra 2 with Trigonometry, and AP Calculus BC.
He also coaches boys’ basketball and is involved in Investing Club.
Mr. Lanza’s passions for teaching and math stretch back to his childhood. He recalls, “I've wanted to be a math teacher since I was in the 3rd grade. I have always loved the way numbers work and was fortunate enough to have a teacher who inspired me to pursue my passions.”
He is grateful now for the opportunity to share those same passions with his students and nurture their future success. He says, “Having a strong foundation in math allows you to be successful at so many things in life. I truly believe that those who excel in this field unlock their full potential in life.”
While Mr. Lanza incorporates technology, such as the ActivPanel, into his teaching, he relies primarily on the traditional “time-tested” way to learn and do mathematics: paper and pencil.
His favorite lessons involve teaching his students “anything that can relate to finances and real-world money.” He notes, “Students who can understand the basics of economics and business can be extremely successful in life. Plus, who doesn't like money?!”
HN is the ideal place for Mr. Lanza to pursue and share his passions. The students here are “special, compassionate, genuine, insightful, and intelligent,” he says, “and they make each day unique and fun and make me excited to come to school each day.”
When he’s not teaching or coaching, Mr. Lanza loves spending time with his family, playing a variety of sports, and playing video games. He also describes himself as “an investor who is always looking to find interesting and creative ways to build wealth.”
The most important advice he would offer his students? “Start saving and investing at an early age; do not be frivolous with your money, and you will not have financial troubles to worry about.”
