Opened in September 2020, Holy Name High School's Innovation Lab provides a unique educational experience for those looking to explore our technology curriculum. The lab features state-of-the-art computers, comfortable desk chairs, and headsets with microphones, giving students the necessary equipment for a variety of computer-related courses. Designed to help students develop critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills, Innovation Lab courses include the following:
Gaming is popular among students of all ages, making this course that teaches career-ready skills and social-emotional learning such a hit. Classes help students learn to diagnose computer problems involving hardware, software, and networking. They'll also learn about the history of gaming and participate in some of the modern classics.
Holy Name High School offers both Introduction to Computer Science and Intermediate Computer Science. The intro course focuses on computational thinking and programming concepts, while the intermediate course introduces students to Python. This open-source programming language helps them learn about data types, graphical user interface-driven applications, and more.
This course at Holy Name High School helps students gain an understanding of how computers communicate with one another over networks. It also covers the programming languages that suit different applications. Students learn the power of the Internet and how it has revolutionized human interaction as a whole.
In this course, students learn the base concepts used by engineers, programmers, and scientists. They'll use VEX robots to explore mechanical systems, such as DC motors and drivetrains. Using VEX Coding Studio software, students are introduced to coding and can enter competitions that help advance their skills.
Beyond use as a web designing lab, computer lab class area, or robotics lab in the school, the Innovation Lab is a place where creativity and excitement thrive. Students who want a sense of camaraderie should look into our virtual gaming team. eSports refers to competitive video gaming, which is an ever-growing and extremely popular industry. The Holy Name High School eSports team calls the Innovation Lab home, offering a dedicated space for practice, strategizing, and competitions. The team has included over 40 students in past years, and our Rainbow 6 Siege team won six national titles since 2019. Keep in mind that these titles provide more than just glory and trophies – they can reward students with scholarship money, as well.
