Below are the scholarships available to the Classes of 2023, 2024 and 2025. This year, all Holy Name-specific scholarships will be submitted via Google Forms. *The forms will open on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. To apply, please click on each link (the bolded name of the scholarship) for more information.*

*Students who receive the Ciolek, Kilcoyne or Talty Scholarships during their freshman year, as well as Placement Test, Merit, Academic, Alumni and Music Scholarships, will have those automatically renewed each year, as long as they continue to meet the criteria set for each scholarship.*
Frank DiMarino Memorial Scholarship: Established in 2012 by his family, friends, and the Holy Name community, the Frank DiMarino Memorial Scholarship was created to honor a student, and his or her family, for their commitment to community service. Frank served as the HN Booster Club treasurer for eight years and was a dedicated fan of Holy Name athletics. Frank will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his contagious smile, and his years of service to Holy Name.
An essay of 500 words or less, answering “How has your family played an integral part in your desire to give back to your school and/or community?” is required. Applicants must be currently enrolled as freshmen, sophomores or juniors at Holy Name.
Two (2) $1,000 non-renewable scholarships will be awarded at the class awards assemblies held in May. These grants will be used for the following academic year.
Emil B. Maras Memorial Scholarship: Mr. Maras was a gentleman and scholar who taught at Holy Name High School from 1963 until his retirement after suffering a stroke in 1983. During his twenty-year tenure, he touched the lives of many students. Mr. Maras was a man who was passionate about his teaching career. He was a proponent of the triple threat –mind, body, spirit. He left a legacy at Holy Name that will never be forgotten.
For this scholarship, you must write an essay of no less than 3 pages and no more than 5 pages. It must be word processed, double spaced in Times New Roman font. The student must read the memorial booklet honoring Mr. Maras to get to know the man. These booklets are found on reserve in the school library. Students must also research any one of the following public/historical figures that also lived their lives with passion, compassion, and conviction: St. Thomas More; Mother Theresa; Thomas Merton; Pope John Paul II; Randy Pausch; and Irena Sendler. Students must then also select a person from their own lives, living or dead, who models these same three qualities. The essay should discuss how these three people, 1.) Mr. Maras, 2.) the public/historical figure they researched, and 3.) their personal role model, are examples of people who possessed the qualities of passion, compassion, and conviction. It should also explain how they lived or live their lives as Christians in a secular world.
Applicants must be currently enrolled as freshmen, sophomores or juniors at Holy Name. Three (3) $2,000 non-renewable scholarships will be awarded at the class awards assemblies in May. These grants will be used for the following academic year.
Bryan ’53 and Beth Gallagher ’52 Powers Scholarship: Established in 2019 by the family of Bryan ’53 and Beth Gallagher ’52 Powers, this scholarship was created to honor a student for his/her commitment to the ideals of Holy Name High School. Bryan and Beth are graduates of Holy Name, as are many of their relatives, including their seven children and several grandchildren. They are dedicated Namers and have served the school in many capacities.
An essay answering “What does the statement “remember you’re a Namer” mean to you? As a student at Holy Name how do your words and actions reflect positively on the school? How do you bring honor to the school? What does it mean to be a Namer?” is required.
Applicants must be currently enrolled as freshmen, sophomores or juniors at Holy Name. Two (2) $1,000 non-renewable scholarships will be awarded at the class awards assemblies held in May. These grants will be used for the following academic year.
Karen Powers & Vivian Habrat Scholarship: The Karen Powers (Drama) Scholarship was established in memory of Karen Powers, a former social studies teacher and Drama Club director at both Nazareth Academy and Holy Name High School. She always encouraged her students to participate in various aspects of theatre arts, and was known as an excellent teacher and unselfish friend. She passed away in 1992 after a battle with cancer. Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, this scholarship will also be given in memory of Vivian Habrat. Ms. Habrat was a longtime English and speech teacher at both Nazareth and Holy Name who held her students to high expectations, but always made sure her classes were filled with humor and wit.
A short paragraph answering “Why do you think you deserve this award?” is required. Applicants must be currently enrolled as freshmen, sophomores or juniors at Holy Name, and be active members of the school’s Drama Club.
One (1) $500 non-renewable scholarship will be awarded at the class awards assemblies held in May. This grant will be used for the following academic year.
Edward Seitz ’81 Memorial Scholarship: The Edward Seitz ’81 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2006 by Mrs. Joyce Davidson Seitz in memory of her husband, Edward Seitz. Edward was a United States diplomatic security special agent who was tragically killed while serving his country in Iraq.
Applicants must be currently enrolled as freshmen, sophomores or juniors at Holy Name. One (1) $1,000 non-renewable scholarship will be awarded at the class awards assemblies held in May. This grant will be used for the following academic year.
John A. Koch Jr. '68 Memorial Scholarship (*Recently Added/Deadline is April 8*): Established in 2020, the John A. Koch Jr. Memorial Scholarship was created to celebrate the life of John A. “Jack” Koch Jr. who passed away in 2017. Jack was a 1968 graduate of Holy Name High School where he often spoke of fond memories with friends, athletics, and faith. These themes followed Jack throughout his life as a loving husband to Nancy, and a devoted father to Nicole, Jack ’96 and Bob ’99.
To honor his legacy, a $500 renewable scholarship will be awarded to a current sophomore who best exemplifies what it means to walk in faith. This student will receive a $500 scholarship as a junior, and then a $500 scholarship as a senior.
The applicant must demonstrate a positive influence within their school community, a desire to work hard and continue their education at Holy Name. Additionally, they will need to answer the following questions by choosing to write either in an essay format or in an interview. If applicant chooses the interview process they are permitted to submit a video (2 to 3 minutes) for the committee to review.
1. In reflecting on your past several years at Holy Name High School, how do you think your educational and spiritual experiences here have shaped your beliefs and prepared you to meet the challenges of your future?
2. Who has been the biggest positive influence in your life and how can you in turn be a positive influence in your community to serve others?
3. Tell us about yourself! What do you enjoy studying? What are your hobbies and interests?
Shannon Fedor ’01 Memorial Scholarship: The Shannon Fedor Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 by her family, friends, and the Holy Name community. Shannon was a member of the Class of 2001 and was involved in many school activities, including soccer. She will be most remembered for her energetic personality and warm smile. She truly epitomized the spirit of Holy Name. Applicants must be currently enrolled as sophomores at Holy Name.
Students will need to write about themselves and the things they enjoy doing outside of school, while also naming two things that they would like to achieve in the next five years and how they plan to go about completing them.
Two (2) $850 non-renewable scholarships will be awarded at the class awards assembly held in May. This grant will be used for the following academic year.
Joseph Franck ’73 Memorial Scholarship: The Joseph Franck ’73 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 by his immediate family members. Joe graduated from the class of 1973 and went on to establish a successful CPA business largely due to his support from fellow Namers. Joe loved his camaraderie with fellow Holy Name alumni and will always stay connected through this scholarship.
A 50 to 100-word essay answering “What does Holy Name High School mean to you? ” is required. Students will also need to provide their high school attendance record (ex. how many days absent thus far).
Applicants must be currently enrolled as sophomores at Holy Name. One (1) $1,000 non-renewable scholarship will be awarded at the class awards assembly held in May. This grant will be used for the following academic year.
Sisters of Charity Scholarship: The Sisters of Charity Scholarship was established in 2002, in memory of Sister Marie Magdalen Dunn, educator and assistant principal of Holy Name High School from 1970 to 1996.
A 500-word essay answering “Catholic Education – How does it make a difference in today’s world?” is required.
Applicants must have completed their freshman year at Holy Name and be currently enrolled as sophomores. One non-renewable scholarship will be awarded at the class awards assembly held in May, with the amount to be determined. This grant will be used for the following academic year.
Sara Jean ’00 and Kevin ’09 McCarthy Memorial Scholarship: The Sara Jean McCarthy ’00 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 by her family, friends, and the Holy Name High School community. Sara was a member of the class of 2000. She participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, and campus ministry. In 2017, the scholarship was renamed to include Sara’s youngest brother, Kevin, a 2009 graduate who passed away in June 2017. At Holy Name, Kevin played football, served as a student ambassador, and was active in campus ministry. Both Sara and Kevin will always be remembered for their contagious smiles.
An essay of 250 words or less answering “What legacy will you be remembered for and why?” is required.
Applicants must have completed their freshmen and sophomore years at Holy Name and be currently enrolled as juniors. Two (2) $750 non-renewable scholarships will be awarded at the class awards assembly held in May. These grants will be used for the following academic year.
James Priebe ’65 Memorial Scholarship: The James E. Priebe Memorial Scholarship was established on March 28, 1996. James Priebe was a 1965 graduate of Holy Name. He was a down-to-earth, sincere person who had a great sense of humor. He was a person who would do anything for a friend. Jim epitomized the Holy Name Spirit. He was killed in the Vietnam War on April 30, 1967.
An essay of 250 words or less answering one of the following topics is required: Option 1 – Discuss this quote in relationship to your own life: “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. OR Option 2 – ”What is a Hero? Do the American people have any heroes today?” Students will also need to provide their junior year English grade. This will be verified with the English Department. Applicants must have completed their freshmen and sophomore years at Holy Name and be currently enrolled as juniors.
One (1) $500 non-renewable scholarship will be awarded at the class awards assembly held in May. This grant will be used for the following academic year.

James E. Flynn Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be currently enrolled as freshmen, sophomores or juniors, or be eighth graders who will be incoming freshmen at Holy Name during the following school year. Five (5) high school scholarships at $1,000 each will be awarded. The scholarships will be awarded by a random drawing. All scholarship funds will be paid directly to the school listed on the application on behalf of the student. Students must be an active member of the Unity Catholic Federal Credit Union and must be attending a Catholic school. Applications must be received by December 31 annually, and sent to Unity Catholic Federal Credit Union, Attention: Scholarship, 5839 Ridge Road, Parma, OH 44129. Please do NOT turn this scholarship in to the Holy Name Advancement Office; send directly to the address listed here.

The Martin T. Galvin Memorial Scholarship Fund for Catholic High School Students
In 2018 the Lawyers Guild of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland established the Martin T. Galvin Memorial Scholarship Fund in conjunction with the Catholic Community Foundation. The Reminger Foundation granted $10,000 toward the creation of this scholarship to honor their departed colleague and friend Marty Galvin. The purpose is to provide scholarship assistance to a student enrolled or entering a high school providing a Catholic education within the Diocese of Cleveland in the fall of 2021. Students eligible to apply must have a family member who is a member of the Catholic Lawyers Guild or a parent who is an attorney practicing law in Northeast Ohio; be currently accepted to, or enrolled in a Catholic high school within the Diocese of Cleveland; be registered at a parish in the Diocese; and be participating members of their school and/or community. Applicants must complete the student-applicant sections of the application which includes a listing of extracurricular activities and a written essay. Students must also select someone to complete the letter of recommendation and ask their
principal to complete another section. If you meet these criteria and would like to apply, applications are available in the main office or with Mrs. Carter. All completed applications must be returned to Mrs. Carter by March 1.
John P. Patton Memorial Scholarship
This full-tuition scholarship is open to current juniors and sophomores applicants who are children or grandchildren of current US military personnel or US veterans, and who are involved in school life and consistently demonstrate positive character traits. The student must also demonstrate financial need by completing the FACTS financial aid application; achieving a 3.0 or higher GPA; and completing a one-page essay. This scholarship would be applied to next year’s tuition. If you meet these criteria and would like to apply, applications are available in the main office or with Mrs. Carter. All completed applications must be returned to Mrs. Carter by March 1.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council 11464 Knights of Columbus Ferdinand P. Goll Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to all students who are enrolled in a Catholic high school located within the Cleveland Diocese. One (1) $500 scholarship will be awarded. In 2021, due to the pandemic, this scholarship is not being awarded.
Ohio Catholic Federal Credit Union Catholic Education Scholarship
In order to apply for a scholarship, applicants must be a member of Ohio Catholic Federal Credit Union with a minimum balance of $50.00 or a current loan, currently attend a Catholic elementary school or high school in Ohio, and be willing to submit proof of income if chosen as a finalist. All families with students enrolled in Catholic schools are eligible for membership with Ohio Catholic FCU and membership can easily be established by calling 888-696-4462.
Online applications will be accepted beginning February 1, through March 15, 2021. The scholarship funds will be sent directly to the Catholic school in the name of the family awarded the funds no later than mid-August. Please note that applications will not be accepted once the application period closes. Additionally, incomplete applications will not be considered. Once a scholarship application has been submitted, the applicant cannot change or alter any information on the form.

Holy Name High School accepts the Cleveland Scholarship Program (CSP). Provided through the Ohio Department of Education, this Program gives students living within the boundaries of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District the opportunity to attend private schools at a discounted rate. The high schools chosen for attendance must be located in Cleveland, or located in a district adjacent to Cleveland. Holy Name qualifies as it is located in the Parma City School District, which is adjacent to Cleveland. For high school students, the maximum scholarship amount awarded through the Cleveland Scholarship Program is $7,500. Families are then responsible for paying the remainder of the tuition balance.
Students and families can now begin applying for the Cleveland Scholarship Program. We would like all applications in by Monday, April 4, 2022 so internally, we can successfully submit everything to the Ohio Department of Education by April 30.
If you currently are a Cleveland Scholarship Program recipient, you must fill out the 2022-2023 Renewal Form. After filling out this form, email the completed form, as well as a copy of a current utility bill (one that has been issued in the last two months and includes both the service and mailing address), to statescholarships@holynamehs.com.
If you live in the city of Cleveland, but are not currently utilizing the Cleveland Scholarship Program, we encourage you to apply. You must fill out the 2022-2023 Request Form. After filling out this form, email the completed form, as well as a copy of a current utility bill (acceptable forms to prove residency can be found here) and a copy of your student’s birth certificate, to statescholarships@holynamehs.com.

In 2022-2023, Holy Name will accept both EdChoice Traditional, and EdChoice Expansion Scholarships. Please note that these scholarships are controlled by the state. Holy Name is here to submit your application but is not involved in the selection or distribution of the funds.

Students who are assigned to certain public high schools are eligible to apply for a $7,500 EdChoice Traditional Scholarship. The 2022-2023 list can be found here: 2022-2023 EdChoice Traditional Designated Public Schools List. This includes, but is not limited to, Bedford, Cleveland Heights, East Cleveland Shaw, Euclid, Garfield Heights, Maple Heights, Richmond Heights, Warrensville Heights, Elyria, and Lorain High Schools.
Please note that any current Holy Name student in grades 9-11 who received the EdChoice Traditional Scholarship in 2021-2022 (i.e. Parma), is eligible to renew the EdChoice Traditional Scholarship in 2022-2023.
To renew an EdChoice Traditional Scholarship, submit to the Holy Name Main Office a completed 2022-2023 EdChoice Renewal Form and a current utility bill (acceptable bills to submit can be found here and must be no more than two months old, and show both the billing and service address). However, we do not recommend this option and encourage you to use the online portal if at all possible. All income verification documents and forms must go directly to the Ohio Department of Education; Holy Name is not involved in that review process.
Families who qualify for EdChoice Traditional must pay the remaining tuition balance after the $7,500 scholarship is applied. However, families who have their income verified and qualify as EdChoice Traditional – Low Income do not have to pay the remaining tuition balance. Other fees will need to be paid.
EdChoice Expansion is another possibility for Holy Name students who do not live in the city of Cleveland, and who are not assigned to a public high school designated on the EdChoice Traditional List. EdChoice Expansion is based on gross family income.
Families are eligible to apply for the EdChoice – Expansion Scholarship if the family household income is at or below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Here are the 2022-2023 EdChoice Expansion Income Guidelines.
Those families whose household gross income is between 201-250 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines are eligible to receive a $7,500 EdChoice Scholarship, but must pay the remaining tuition balance. EdChoice Expansion recipients that have a household gross income of 200 percent or lower qualify for low-income, and Holy Name cannot charge the remaining tuition balance (other fees are required to be paid to Holy Name).
To renew an EdChoice Expansion Scholarship, submit to the Holy Name Main Office a completed 2022-2023 EdChoice Renewal Form and a current utility bill (acceptable bills to submit can be found here and must be no more than two months old and show both the billing and service address). You may also submit by emailing the paperwork to statescholarships@holynamehs.com.
EdChoice Expansion renewal recipients do not have to pay the remaining tuition balance after the $7,500 scholarship is applied, as long as the family income is once again at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. If your income status has changed since last year, the EdChoice Scholarship award and tuition obligation amount may change.
To request an EdChoice Expansion Scholarship, submit to the Holy Name Main Office a completed 2022-2023 EdChoice Request Form, a current utility bill (acceptable bills to submit can be found here and must show be no more than two months old and show both the billing and service address), and a copy of your student's birth certificate (make sure the student’s name on their birth certificate matches the name written on the application).
