A graduate of Baldwin Wallace, Mr. Joe Eiben has taught US History at Holy Name for the past five years. More recently, he added Intro to Philosophy to his course load. He also moderates Cooking Club, directs the Sunshine Committee, and participates in the Accreditation Committee.
Before joining the HN faculty, Mr. Eiben taught for one year at St. Peter’s School in Lorain and served as a teacher’s aide for one and a half years at St. Charles Borromeo.
Growing up, Mr. Eiben always knew that he would choose a career that would allow him to help people. He selected history as his subject matter “because it is so relevant to today!”
Most of his favorite memories at HN involve the students. He explains, “I love HN because the students are so funny and weird and smart and just solid human beings that I like to spend my hours with. I feel that the students actually like each other and that they have each other's backs if needed. I think a lot of this comes from the staff too. Though people come and go, this staff always remains familiar and caring.”
Mr. Eiben’s favorite lessons are any that involve simulations. He says, “I always think it is funny when I hear sophomores arguing about history—whether they should trust Serbia or Austria-Hungary or how to survive through Iwo Jima.”
Mr. Eiben is a big fan of technology in the classroom, especially Blooket, Kahoot, Quizlet, and other interactive review games. He also uses Remind to answer students’ questions, which he loves because “it shows they are really trying.”
In his free time, Mr. Eiben enjoys doing “anything outside”—for example, camping, hiking and kayaking. He also encourages his students to “get out, explore America, and do good!”
